The Northern Gate by soulburn3d The Northern Gate by soulburn3d
This image came to me in a split second before getting home, in appeared in my mind with such clarity, that I feel as though it may not have been a moment of inspiration, but instead a memory of an image I once saw. But I can't for the life of me remember what image it would have been. Something by John Harris maybe? Steve Burg? Maybe the subject is something pretty common that lots of people have done? I just can't remember. So if you see an image that looks just like this one, here's my homage to that image. If not, then I'm pleased that this came with such ease.

This reminds me of the graveyards of the Homeworld series, where you could always see the giant hulking wrecks of ships in the background.

I like how with so much complexity comes a ''simple'' shape... Really nice work.

Thanks, that's one of my goals with my work is to have pretty simple geometric shapes / compositions, but integrate tons of tiny details. So I'm glad this came across to you.

Regarding your statement. It reminds me loosely on Homeworld 2.
Mayhaps you have played that game once.

Anyway, quite an nice and errie atmosphere in there.

Actually, I discovered the game about a year ago, would love to play, but very little time to play videogames with a 2 year old in the house :) Don't think that was the inspiration, but thanks for the mention, one day I'll find it :) And thanks, glad you like the final piece.

It reminds me of the cover art of an Orson Scott Card book. One of his Ender books, but I'm afraid I don't recall which one. I've a feeling you'd know which I think of if you spotted it.

Never read his work before, but if you come across the book give me a shout, would love to see it.

Okay, did a quick search and found which one it was. Speaker For the Dead by Orson Scott Card. If you google "speaker for the dead book cover" the first four image results are all of what came to my mind when viewing your piece.

Ah ok, that makes sense. I am a huge fan of John Harris' work, so I'm not surprised some of that flavor got into this image. That wasn't the image I was afraid I had copied :) But I can see how the moods are similar. Check out "Mass: The Art Of John Harris" if you dig the cover and would like to see more work. That book is one of my top 10 favorite art books.

Well, as you probably read in the description, I felt like I may have accidentally copied the image from somewhere, so I'm always on the lookout :)

I like this very much. It's very old-school, diagonal and facing front. I always love to see more art like this, because a ot of concept art is just too intense.

Thanks Deepblu! Ya, I tend not to post large images anymore as a lot of my larger images have been used without my permission on posters, CD covers, advertisements, in games, etc. Anyways, if I uploaded a bigger one you'd very quickly see that it's not nearly as detailed as it seems to be. :) A lot of matte painters will paint at twice the final resolution, so that while at full res stuff looks blocky, when shrunk down to 2k it looks all detailed.

Sure thing, you do some of the nicest atmospheric & vast feeling scenes.

I hear ya, there are thieving worms who think the internet is there personal art exploitation resource. Suppose I don't worry about that because I'm small potatoes & do my thing strictly for sh*ts and giggles.

Really, most painters do that for print output or just web/TV/theater viewing?

Not sure for print. But feature film matte painters tend to do that a lot. In general, I always paint as large as I can (sometimes up to 6000 pixels across), but only really worry if it looks good at 1000 to 2000 pixels. But everyone has their own preference and method.
