Over Black Clouds by soulburn3d Over Black Clouds by soulburn3d
Painting for a CD cover for the band God Fear None. Depicts a desolate landscape, our travelers come upon a mysterious ancient building, so tall it breaks the clouds that enshroud the planet. The castle is 3d with extra painting on top, the ground and clouds are a series of photos I took on various family vacations, stitched together in photoshop and then again, painted on top to blend the seams between the various pieces.

As a professional, I never review the music of the people I make art for :)

Okay. 10 years? Well, I`m very inpatient, so I`ll try to deal with it little earlier. :) (Smile)

Glad you like it. And sure you can figure out how to do this sort of stuff! I couldn't do an image like like 10 years ago, but I did a ton of research and practice and it got me to where I am today. No reason you can't too.

Well, I can't talk specifics about this project, that info is private.

But from my experience doing covers, anywhere from $200-2000. It depends on a lot of factors. First is how involved the image is. A quick, rough painting will be less than a full 3d picture (this particular image was pretty involved). Next is who is paying for it. If the band is a small indy band that only sells a few hundred CDs, then it'll be less. If the band has a record label, or sells a million records, it'll be more. Also depends on the genre, in a lot of musical styles, a CD with physical artwork is no longer desirable, the majority of the sales will be mp3, so if they are doing a CD, they just want something simple and cheap. But the metal genre still seems interested in a physical media, or at least most metal bands feel that some sort of cool artwork to go along with the music helps sell the record. It may just be because they grew up with buying metal Tapes/CDs that had great artwork, and so when they start their own band, they want to have the same thing. Also, you may get more if you're doing the interior art/layout as well. Or some people don't care about the CD cover anymore, but do hire an artist to do website/tshirt/stage video design. So anyways, lots of factors go into the final price. Hope that answer isn't too vague.

I wasn't the person who asked the question and I just stumbled upon your artist page to view some of your stuff, but I read this and wanted to say I found it interesting, so thank you for the informative bit of information there

Glad you found it interesting. Not enough people I find talk about the business of art, while I'd much rather just be doing the art of course, people need to know the business side if they want to make a living doing this stuff.

How much would a band pay for such a picture?
