Gas City III Rough by soulburn3d Gas City III Rough by soulburn3d
With very limited painting time this week, I started this one image, and after 2 hours, I was like 1% done. It turned out to be way more complex than I had originally hoped, and here I had wanted to do something quick. Frustrated and tired, I quickly whipped this gas city rough out to relax. I promise I'll get back to the other image some week when I have some decent time to devote to it.

Wow, the air is almost as thick as San Francisco's.

I really love the shapes of the architectural structures ! Excellent 'end of the world' mood, too !

Fantastic sense of scale. Its like a much darker and scary version of Bespin's Cloud City. :)

Well wasn't it a huge influence on all of us? ;) I'm not saying its actually evil, it just gives me that feeling.

"Well wasn't it a huge influence on all of us?": Not all of us, my wife was more a fan of the Flash Gordon aesthetic. There's a funny bit on the special edition of the flash gordon movie where comic artist Alex Ross talks about his love for the film, and how he wished Starwars had been more like that. Personally, I completely disagree :) But everyone has their opinion.

I can understand that, Flash Gordon was fun in its own way. So were a lot of those pulp style series. I used to love the old black and white Zorro. :D
I must admit even Mr Lucas lost the plot with at least 2 of the prequel Star Wars movies. I think he kept seeing dollar signs instead of good storytelling.

Ya, I was more referring to just the look of the films, as opposed to their plot specifically. I prefer the more muted colors and dirty future, whereas my wife liked the stronger colors and cleaner look of Flash Gordon. I did like Fifth Element though, which in some ways is a continuation of the Flash Gordon color palette. :) But Star wars for me will always be the bigger influence on the look of my own work.

Oh I know what you meant by the look. I only mentioned plot because we were talking about Star Wars and of course as far as plot goes The Phantom Donkey doesn't have one.

In terms of look I always found Blade Runner and Alien inspired me more, I guess I like the creepy dark look. :)

As my work attests, I like the dark and creepy too. :) But didn't see those films till I was a bit older, so Star wars was one of my first inspirations as a kid.

Thanks guys. Shadow, this one took me maybe an hour and a half, these sorta of images get most of the way there quickly, and then the majority of the time is just carefully adjusting values and elements to try and get a good balance. Maybe I'll do a full version with 3d buildings in the future.
